City officials light up a dark intersection at the corner of 45th and Leavenworth streets after two drivers hit pedestrians this week.

Omaha police said drivers did not see any pedestrians crossing the Leavenworth crosswalk at 45th Street on Monday and Tuesday nights.

A woman was sent to hospital with injured legs, ribs and shoulder. Another man suffered a non-life-threatening head injury. Police cited each driver for not yielding, then alerted officials to the darkness – the first notification, according to the Omaha City Public Works Department and the OPPD.

“We really depend on customers using our outage reporting procedures to identify them,” said Wyndle Young, director of customer service and government infrastructure. “Once we have them, we can do a pretty good job of restoring them, replacing them or whatever is needed.”

Seven-year Leavenworth Street resident Sue McCann thought a noise she heard was a car crash on Tuesday night.

“I didn’t see it, but I heard it,” McCann said. “I heard all the sirens and stuff, then I went out on the porch to see what was going on.”

She said she saw someone lying on the street.

McCann hopes the new lights installed Wednesday will brighten everyone’s vision.

An OPPD spokesperson said a crew upgraded the lamp post at 45th and Leavenworth on Wednesday. The utility is in the midst of an effort to upgrade about 100,000 outdated light bulbs in city-owned streetlights.

Three were taken care of on Wednesday.

A city engineer says the city cannot monitor these outages and relies on reports called to the OPPD.
