Red Hook Container Terminal announces operational performance results for its fleet of 10 heavy-duty zero-emission battery-electric terminal tractors
PORT NEWARK, NJ–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Red Hook Container Terminals LLC today announced full first quarter results of operating performance data for its fleet of ten (10) BYD Motors zero-emission battery electric terminal tractors operated at its terminal. container ship from Port Newark, New Jersey. Red Hook’s electric fleet achieved an 81% drop in fuel costs and a 90% drop in climate-altering CO2 emissions, compared to previous performance of diesel-powered vehicles. Red Hook’s fleet represents the largest deployment of zero-emission battery-electric terminal tractors in the Eastern United States and the first at a Port Authority marine terminal in New York and New Jersey.
“I am pleased to report that the operating results of the BYD Battery Electric Terminal Tractors are truly outstanding,” said Mike Stamatis, President and CEO of Red Hook Container Terminal LLC. “We saw an 81% drop in fuel costs and a 90% drop in CO2 emissions, while achieving 100% availability of our terminal tractor fleet. BYD terminal tractors and Amply Power control systems work perfectly. We are currently pursuing additional emissions reduction projects as part of Red Hook’s strategy toward net zero by 2025.”
Battery electric tractors are used to move cargo containers at the Red Hook Marine Terminal in Port Newark, as well as for trips to other terminals in Port Newark and Port Elizabeth, and to the Millennium Facility MarineRail. The project was developed and is managed by Climate Change Mitigation Technologies LLC (CCMT), the leading New Jersey-based developer and manager of zero-emission truck and bus projects for public and private fleets.
“We left the land of estimates and projections and entered the real world of digitally controlled performance data. As a project developer and project manager, CCMT is thrilled with the results, which actually exceed our expectations, which were quite high to begin with,” said James Sherman, President and CEO of Climate Change Mitigation Technologies LLC. “What interests me is the share of fuel costs and CO2 emissions are the result of idle emissions. Every port operator can achieve these same results now.
Managed charging, provided by partner AMPLY Power’s OMEGA software system, has been key to keeping fuel costs low and ensuring vehicles are charged and ready to go at the start of each shift. OMEGA optimizes low-cost charging while keeping the amount of electricity drawn from the site within peak load limits; the software also manages the charging operation to identify and resolve any issues that might otherwise go unnoticed.
“We’re thrilled to partner with Red Hook to help them achieve their vision of sustainable and environmentally responsible port operations, and we’re excited to help them reduce their fuel costs while doing so,” said Sean Larkin, Director of Sales and Business Development for AMPLY Power. “A lot of people worry about electricity costs, but as Red Hook has proven, electric vehicles can be fuel efficient while demonstrating reliable uptime with no missed days of operation. This is a situation win-win.
“Red Hook Terminal and the Port of Newark are an excellent testing ground for BYD’s advanced and innovative battery electric technology. These results show that a diligent operation like the Red Hook Terminal, and the community it serves, benefit from removing carbon from our atmosphere,” said Patrick Duan, senior vice president of operations, BYD North America. . “Congratulations to Red Hook Terminal and the Port of Newark for achieving these very positive results.”
