Nassau Inter-County Express (NICE) buses along some routes are now equipped with front bike racks for riders who wish to travel with their bikes in tow.

NICE CEO Jack Khzouz and Nassau County Director Laura Curran announced at a press conference on Monday the new initiative that aims to improve the passenger experience and encourage eco-friendly transportation. environment. On buses without the new bicycle racks, bicycles are only allowed to board the bus if they fold up.

“We are now able to offer cyclists the option of connecting to a NICE bus while safely stowing their bikes in the front of the vehicle,” Khzouz said.

The new bike racks, which can hold two bikes and attach to the front of 60-foot buses, will be implemented on weekday n6-Xpress Hempstead Turnpike, which connects the Hempstead Transit Center to the bus terminal in Jamaica in Queens, and the n88 weekend buses, which go to Jones Beach from the Hempstead Transit Center and Freeport LIRR station.

“It’s important to encourage and help people who choose to use public transportation,” Curran said. “Adding bike racks to the busiest NICE bus routes will provide comfort for cycling enthusiasts, weekend beachgoers and those who travel via NICE and rely on a bicycle to complete their trip. “

Each bike rack can hold two adult size bikes with 16 inch or larger wheels. Children’s bicycles and motorized bicycles are not allowed. There is no additional charge for using the racks. Riders must load and unload bikes themselves, as drivers are not allowed to leave the bus to help. An explanatory brochure for customers will be provided on the routes, and an instructional video is also available at nicebus.com.
