Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari launched Ashok Leyland Electric Double Decker Bus named Switch EiV 22 in Mumbai today, 18th August 2022. By launching the Electric Bus, the Minister of Union Transport, Shri Nitin Gadkari, said, “There is a need to transform the country’s transport system, with a long-term perspective. With a focus on urban transport reform, we are trying to build an integrated mobility ecosystem for electric vehicles (EVs) with a low carbon footprint and high passenger density. With growing consumer demand for greener transport solutions, the government’s vision and policies aim to encourage greater adoption of electric vehicles.

According to Ashok Leyland, Switch EiV 22 is the first and only air-conditioned electric double-decker bus in India, which was designed, developed and manufactured in India. The company informs that the Switch EiV 22 is equipped with the latest technology, state-of-the-art design, maximum security and the best comfort features in its class.

Sharing his vision for the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, the Union Minister said, “My plan is to link Nariman Point with Delhi. 70% of the works are already finished. Urging automakers, he added, “Let’s plan luxury electric buses that can travel from Mumbai to Delhi in just 12 hours.”

Union Transport Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari has said that electricity as an automotive fuel is highly cost effective compared to other fuels like diesel. “Importing crude oil is a big challenge for the government. The use of solar energy has reduced the cost of electricity to a great extent.

Introducing electricity as an alternative fuel, the Union Minister said that 35% of pollution in the country is due to diesel and petrol. In this context, the Minister stressed the need for cost-effective, non-polluting and indigenous import substitutes. “It is time for India to start using alternative fuels like electricity, ethanol, methanol, biodiesel, bio-CNG, bio-LNG and green hydrogen for automotive sector.”

Sharing his plans for the automotive industry, Shri Gadkari said, “My dream is to make the automotive industry from the current size of Rs. 7.5 crore lakh to Rs. 15 crore lakh by the end of the year 2024.” This is an achievable goal, he added. The minister observed that the sector has maximum employment potential and yields maximum taxes to central and state governments.

About Switch EiV (according to Ashok Leyland)

The Switch electric double-decker bus can carry almost twice the number of seated passengers compared to a single-decker bus, with only an 18% increase in curb weight (excluding passengers).

With contemporary styling and feel-good interiors and exteriors, the double-decker bus boasts of wide front and rear doors, two staircases and an emergency door that meets the latest safety standards. The air conditioning provides effective cooling in the hot weather conditions of India, while the seating capacity optimized for 65 passengers is the maximum number of seats to be offered in the given footprint.
