Kansas City Airport to Install Wireless Charging Ports for Electric Buses
As part of the new $ 1.5 billion Kansas City International (KCI) terminal project, the Kansas City Department of Aviation is investing in a wireless vehicle charging system for its buses.
The charging solution will be provided by high-power inductive charging provider Momentum Dynamics, ready for the opening of the new terminal in 2023. The inductive system will extend the reach of the airport’s electric buses by providing incremental charging to the KCI economy parking lot. existing. electric shuttles, keeping buses in service longer along the seven mile loop.

The system will be supported by two 300 kW wireless chargers located at the shuttle stops of the new terminal. While waiting for the passengers, the electric buses will park at the charging stations to automatically receive an incremental charge, which takes place during the loading and unloading of the passengers. Each charging session ends when the bus leaves the pad.
Aaron Kaden, Acting Fleet Manager at KCI, said: âWe are designing and building a new, modern terminal and we want to make sure that its supporting infrastructure does not interfere with the design. Induction charging was not only an efficient solution in terms of spending and ongoing costs, but was the only system we found capable of delivering power without the traditional plug-in infrastructure.
Andy Daga, Founder and CEO of Momentum Dynamics, added: âWe are proud to be part of the new KCI terminal project, which, through the visionary approach of KCI’s management team, will improve electric vehicle operations. of the magnificent terminal by providing invisible and automatic recharging without disturbing passengers or drivers.
