Unidentified miscreants torched at least 12 buses at a city terminal in Faridpur district in the early hours of Saturday, prompting police to launch a criminal investigation.

All the buses – belonging to former League leader Awami Sajjad Hossain Barkat and his brother Imtiaz Hossain Rubel, both accused of money laundering – had been kept at the terminal since they were seized by the Anti-Corruption Commission in June 2020 .

Md Alimuzzaman, Superintendent of Faridpur Police, said some assailants set fire to the 12 “South Line” Paribahan buses around 1.30am at Goalchamte terminal. “Some 22 buses were parked at the terminal,” he said.

On information, firefighters were dispatched to the scene and the fire was finally extinguished.

Suraiya Parveen, wife of Barkat, said a local court on February 25, 2020 ordered the seizure of 55 vehicles belonging to Barkat-Rubel.

Shipul Ahmed, deputy director of the Faridpur Fire and Civil Defense Department, said: “An investigation is underway to find out the origin of the fire.”

“The Criminal Investigation Department will look into the case,” Inspector Nasir Hossain said.

On March 3 last year, the CID filed a complaint against 10 people including Barkat and Rubel in a Tk 2,000 crore money laundering case.

CID Deputy Superintendent Uttam Kumar Biswas submitted the indictment to the Dhaka Magistrate’s Court.
