Location service what3words is now available with vehicles from several manufacturers in India, from TVS Motor Company to Mercedes-Benz. What’s unique about “always-on” global location technology is that it doesn’t rely on an active data connection. We reached out to Chris Sheldrick, co-founder and CEO of What3Words, to find out more about the brand’s expansion into India and tying up with OEMs to make this technology available on more cars and bikes.

What is what3words and how does it work?
The what3words database is stored on board the vehicle, so you do not need a telephone connection to consult it remotely. You just need the GPS signal for your location. A what3words address provides an easy way to communicate very specific locations. what3words mapped the globe in a 3m x 3m square grid and assigned each square a unique combination of three random words, known as a what3words address. Construction of Lot 1 of the Cebu Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project is expected to begin within the first 100 days of the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is currently reviewing documents from three bidders for the project, the Cebu City Public Information Office announced on Tuesday, August 2, 2022.

Package 1 includes Osmeña Blvd., from the Cebu Provincial Capitol to Cebu South Bus Terminal (CSBT) along N. Bacalso Ave.

Engineer Roberto Varquez, BRT focal point for Cebu City, said they were awaiting the report from the DOTr’s Special Tenders and Rewards Committee.

According to Varquez, DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista wanted the project to be awarded to the winning bidder within the first 100 days of Marcos Jr.’s administration.

Marcos Jr. took office on June 30, 2022.

In his first State of the Nation Address on July 25, Marcos Jr. mentioned implementing BRT and building a rail system in Cebu as priorities.

Bidders

Tendering for Lot 1 of the project, which costs about 1 billion pesos, started in May 2022.

Five interested contractors joined the tender, but two were declared unqualified on the basis of their documents.

Once notice to proceed is given to the successful bidder, the civil works for the project will be immediately implemented, Varquez said.

This will include the construction of four bus stations which will be located in Cebu South Bus Station, Cebu Normal University, Fuente Osmeña and Cebu Provincial Capitol.

Last June, a total of 228 trees were felled along the route of lot 1 of the project.

BRT project officials said that the terracing of the trees located in the central island is necessary since the reserved bus lanes will be placed there.

The Project Implementation Unit (PIU) of Cebu BRT has also started its first preparatory activities for Batch 2 of the project.

BRT Package 2 consists of routes from South Road Properties (SRP) to CSBT and another route from Capitol to Cebu IT Park in Barangay Lahug.

Package 3 will include the routes from Talisay City to Barangay Mambaling, Talisay City to SRP and Cebu IT Park to Barangay Talamban.

Engineer Roteza Cantillas of the BRT PIU said he has started conducting public consultations with informal settlers and businesses that will be affected by the implementation of Package 2.

Unlike Package 1, Package 2 will include road widening and property acquisition.

Cantillas said 57 families will be affected and they will be relocated to a mid-rise building to be constructed by the National Housing Authority.

The Cebu BRT project is financed by the French government through the French Development Agency (50.89 million euros); the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development ($116 million), the lending arm of the World Bank Group; the Clean Technology Fund ($25 million) administered by the World Bank; and matching funding from the government of the Philippines ($30 million), according to a World Bank report on the project.

The Office of the Vice President (OVP) on Wednesday (August 3) launched its “Libreng Sakay” program to help commuters in Manila and key cities in Visayas and Mindanao and decongest roads during rush hours.

The program is officially called “Peak Hours Augmentation Bus Service – Libreng Sakay”, which was launched simultaneously in Metro Manila, Davao City, Cebu and Bacolod.

Two buses will be deployed in Manila to run between the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX) and Monumento from 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., peak times in Metro Manila.

“We hope that through this program, we can bring relief to some of our fellow Filipinos who depend on public transportation for their daily trips to work, school and many other places,” said the vice president. Sara Duterte during her speech. speech for the launch of the buses.

In a media interview after the launch, Duterte’s spokesman Reynold Munsayac said the OVP will pay for gas, repair and maintenance expenses for the buses.

He also formed a committee to control traffic on Charsadda Road and also asked for recommendations on relocating Charsadda Bus Station to the New General Bus Station.

He issued these guidelines while chairing a meeting as Chairman of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner Dr Ehteshamul Haq, RTA Secretary Akbar Iftikhar, Assistant Commissioner Obaid Dogar and all the officials concerned.

The new committee consisting of the RTA Secretary, the Deputy City Commissioner and the Deputy Terminal Manager has been established to oversee the provision of facilities to commuters at public and private bus stops.

With the 5,123 new electric cars, electric vehicle sales were more than halved compared to June – the previous month there were 11,722 new electric cars. More than 500 buses are needed to help end public transport problems in the city of Kigali, revealed Emmanuel Katabarwa, the city engineer.

Speaking on the national broadcaster on Sunday July 31, he said out of the existing fleet currently there is a shortfall of 271 public buses.

“We are working with RURA, RTDA so that we can incentivize existing private transport operators to bring more buses to the areas in a few weeks as there may be buses that are inactive or may not be used efficiently.

We are identifying all the buses that might be available and using them appropriately,” he said.

RURA is Rwanda’s Utilities Regulatory Authority, while NTDA is the National Transport Development Agency.

In 2019, RURA launched a tender calling on investors to address public transport complaints in the second generation transport system.

However, Katabarwa said the assessment showed that no investor was found to have sufficient financial capacity and all that was requested to address public transport issues.

He said the 500 buses needed in the capital should each carry 70 to 39 passengers.

“The Covid-19 which also broke out affected public transport operators,” he said.

Need a passenger information system

He said there was a need for a passenger information system.

“Today someone may have missed a bus, but there is a bus that is parked somewhere in the bus station.

The system could help to know when there are passengers in bus routes and terminals to deploy buses,” he said.

Innocent Twahirwa, the managing director of Jali transport Ltd, which operates in two of the city’s four public transport zones, said he would buy more than 70 buses.

“We are on the same table to solve transport problems. There should be more public buses depending on the demand. However, we also need dedicated bus lanes because there may be buses, but the congestion can affect transport efficiency,” he said, adding that they haven’t bought any new buses since 2019.

“We have now ordered over 70 buses which could arrive in January next year. We already have 202 buses in our areas. Buses can help during peak hours. In addition to dedicated bus lanes, we also have need a passenger information system for better management, he said.
