In Switzerland, Industriellen Werke Basel (IWB) has placed a large order with ABB to provide both the electrification and recharging solutions required for the conversion of the bus fleet into electric drives.
Basel public transport operator Basler Verkehrs-Betriebe (BV) aims to convert its entire bus fleet to electric buses by 2027. In one of Switzerland’s largest infrastructure projects, BVB satisfies to the legal requirement that all public transport in the canton of Basel-City must be powered 100% by renewable energy by 2027. The public transport provider will undertake the supply of the 120 vehicles in two stages, while that IWB, which is responsible for the electricity supply, awarded a major contract – to ABB.
According to the agreement, ABB will provide the Basel buses with the necessary equipment for recharging and connection to the network as well as the software for the management of the infrastructure. ABB will also provide service and maintenance for this equipment.
Initially, the recharge of the depot will take place overnight in two temporary facilities, after which the Rank depot will be equipped with recharging stations. Although the Swiss-Swedish company did not specify which equipment should be used here, in its announcement ABB released a rendering of a pantograph solution for depot billing. In addition, along the longer bus lines, two terminal stops (at EuroAirport and Kleinhüningen) will initially receive 450 kW fast charging stations.
âABB convinced us with its significant expertise and experience. Even for us at IWB as experts in the field of e-mobility, a project of this magnitude does not happen every day. We are delighted to be working on this project with ABB, âsaid Patrick Wellnitz, Senior Mobility Advisor at IWB.
âThe technologies for emission-free transport of the future already exist. Now it’s time to put them to work, âsays Frank Muehlon, President of ABB’s E-Mobility division. While his colleague Daniel Müller, head of ABB’s Electrification business sector in Switzerland, added: clean, quiet and flexible electric mobility.
